General Information |

The town Shimoga, on the banks of Tunga river, lies
about (274 kms) south-west of Bangalore was the stronghold of the Keladi
Nayakas during 16th century AD. Worth seeing here is the fort,
the Church of the Sacred heart of Jesus and the Government Museum.

This imposing structure, built in the Roman and Gothic
styles of architecture, has beautiful stained glass panels. |

The Government Museum |
|
The museum displays palm leaf manuscripts, coins, copper
plates and statues made in the Hoyasala style. An interesting exhibit is
18.29 meter long ancient accounts book. |

The Shimoga Fort |
|
Though the fort is largely in ruins, the recently
renovated Seetharamanjaneya shrine is an excellent example of the
elegance of Hoysala workmanship.

Tavarekoppa |
|
(10 kms) The forest department has set up the Shetthally
Lion safari here. |

Bhadravati |
|
(18 kms) This industrial town, the 'Steel Town', is
situated on the banks of the Bhadra river. The 13th century
Lakshminarasimha temple, belonging to the Hoysala period, is found in
the center of the old town.

Agumbe |
|
(70 kms) Situated at 826 meters above sea level, it is
known for its fascinating sunset, the best during the month of November.

Jog Falls |
|
(88 kms) The highest waterfall in India, the river
Sharavathi, flowing over a rocky bed, reaches a steep chasm of 292
meters and leaps down in four distinct falls, Raja - Rani - Rocket and
Roarer presenting a view of extreme grandeur. The Mahatama Gandhi Hydro-electric
Power Station is functional here. The Sharavathi Valley Wildlife
Sanctuary is located at 40 km form Sagar town. |

Gajanur |
|
Gajanur lies (10 kms) south-west. The dam here is
ideal for picnics. Elephants are trained at the elephant camp here. |

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary |
|
This natural bird sanctuary is located on the banks of
Tunga river. Every year, flocks of migratory birds take shelter on the
leafless tress found here. |
